System administration is a great place to start a career in information technology (IT). All businesses today need a powerful digital infrastructure, and keeping hardware, software, and networks seamlessly interoperable can be challenging. This is where system administrators come in.
So what is system administration? This is the setup and maintenance of the company’s computer systems. In other words, what is traditionally called the IT department. This usually applies to multi-user systems such as servers. System administrators help set up servers, keep networks running, and troubleshoot software issues as they arise.
The career of a system administrator can be very diverse. You may be responsible for purchasing new hardware, preventing cyberattacks, educating stakeholders, providing routine automation, or providing technical support to projects.
System administration training should not be too technical. Think of it as an introduction to information technology. Anyone can advance their skills in system administration, and earning a certification in fundamental technologies such as configuring and maintaining servers will allow you to specialize further.
System administration training can also be useful for a variety of other professions. System administration skills will be useful for areas:
- Cybersecurity
- Data Science
- Cloud Computing
- System Analysis
- Web Development
- System Architecture
