Overview

This course provides an overview of using Metadata Editor and Schema Workbench to create data models used by Interactive Reporting, Analyzer, and Report Designer. Through a mixture of interactive, instructor-led activities and hands-on exercises, students learn to create metadata models with Metadata Editor, and Mondrian schema (cubes and stars) with Schema Workbench.

Note: The Business Analytics courses do not cover Data Integration or Administration. For more information on Data Integration, see course DI1000 Pentaho Data Integration Fundamentals. For more information on Administration, see course AD1000 Installation and Administration.

Audience for this course

  • Business Analyst
  • Data Analyst
  • Pentaho Support

Objective

When you complete this course, you should be able to:

  • Describe the different storage networking architectures
  • Use the Data Source Wizard to create data models from a comma-separated value (CSV) file
  • Use Metadata Editor to create a metadata domain and publish the domain to the Pentaho server
  • Create Metadata Concepts to format elements in a metadata domain
  • Use Metadata Editor’s Query Editor to test metadata models
  • Describe Online Analytic Processing (OLAP), Relational Online Analytic Processing (ROLAP), and Dimensional Modeling
  • Describe the purpose and function of a Mondrian schema
  • Use Schema Workbench to create a basic cube for Pentaho Analyzer
  • Use Schema Workbench to create a star schema with hierarchies, levels, and calculated members
  • Write and execute a basic MDX query to test a Mondrian schema within Schema Workbench
  • Describe how Schema Workbench uses roles to control access to Mondrian schemas

Prerequisites for this course

Some knowledge of database design and dimensional modeling is preferred

Outcomes
